JUBILEE 2014

In the tradition of the Catholic Church, the word “Jubilee” is used to designate an anniversary year. Historically, the 50th anniversary of religious life—the Golden Jubilee—is considered the most significant. This was especially true in the 19th century and early 20th century when illness and living conditions made it unusual for much of the population to live past the age of 50.

Today, special reverence continues to be held for the Golden Jubilee as it signifies a strong vocation and commitment of giving one’s life to serve God and others. In addition to celebrating the Golden Jubilee, we recognize our sisters celebrating Silver (25th) Jubilees, Diamond (75th) Jubilees, and Jubilees marking 60, 65, 70, and 80 years.

Honor our Jubilarians by making a gift to support the mission and ministries of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill.

Sister Edith Strong, SC
2014 Golden Jubilarian

“Religious life as a Sister of Charity is the right vocation for me. In hindsight, I wouldn’t want it any other way,” reflected Sister Edith “Edie” Strong. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill from Saint Bernadette Parish, Monroeville, Pennsylvania, on September 8, 1964. In the 50 years that followed, Sister Edie found within her community “an expansive compassion for the poor, a zeal for participating in the mission of Jesus, and a confidence that, with our lives engulfed by the Holy Spirit, immeasurable good can be done in response to the people whose needs cry out to God.”

Sister Mary Joan Hopper, SC
2014 Golden Jubilarian

Fifty years ago, Sister Mary Joan Hopper’s call to religious life was influenced by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill who taught her. She entered the congregation from Sacred Heart Parish, Pittsburgh, on September 8, 1964. “I was fortunate to have some amazingly forward-thinking, creative teachers. They told us about the accomplishments of the Sisters of Charity––like building a college, starting an art department, writing music, and missions in the west,” recalled Sister Mary Joan. “They were reaching out in the world and I thought that being part of that would be so exciting! It has been and still is!” she acknowledged.

“At age 17, I had no idea just how rich my experience as a woman religious would be,” said Sister Barbara Einloth in reflection on her religious life of 50 years. “Through a life in community, one firmly set within the Church and focused on God’s deepest desires, my spiritual life has been nourished, deepened, and challenged to grow.” Sister Barbara entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on September 8, 1964, from her home parish, Saint Canice (now Saint John Vianney), Pittsburgh.
