Who We Are

Sister Judith Laffey

Sister Judith Laffey, SC, is the Pastoral Care Minister at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. For the past four years, she has been instrumental in fostering the religious and spiritual vitality of the retired sisters living at Caritas Christi.
“I enjoy being with the sisters and sharing in their faith, hope, and love for our community. They are noble women who have courage to live their life to the fullest—even in these elder years. They are shining examples to me on how to enter and live these wisdom years,” says Sister Judy.
Sister Judy entered the Congregation on September 8, 1958, from Resurrection Parish (Brookline, PA). She served as a primary teacher for 10 years in Catholic schools in the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, and Baltimore. She became a nurse in 1972 and served as a medical-surgical staff nurse, critical care nurse, dialysis nurse, home health care nurse, clinical nurse specialist in cancer care, pain management specialist, and a hospice care nurse.
In 1995, she entered the next phase of her ministry as a chaplain and pastoral care minister. She served as a Chaplain Resident at West Penn Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA) for one year before becoming a Hospice Chaplain with Odyssey Health Care, Inc. (Pittsburgh, PA). From 1997 through 2003, she served as a Chaplain in the Department of Pastoral Care at Mercy Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA).
Sister Judy is a graduate of Seton Hill University, the College of Mount Saint Joseph, University of Pittsburgh, and Duquesne University. In addition to her Clinical Pastoral Care education, she received a one-year nursing fellowship in Cancer pain Management at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY).
