Sister Jude Thaddeus O’Donnell, SC

Sister Jude Thaddeus O'Donnell, SC, age 90, died Monday, January 16, 2006 at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. Born in McKeesport, PA, Sister Jude Thaddeus entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1933, from Saint Paulinus Parish in Clairton, PA. Preceded in death by her parents, Leo F. and Margaret (Conroy) O’Donnell, two brothers, Joseph T. and Leo G. O’Donnell and three sisters, Mary Agnes Regan, Leota Lane and Mrs. Russell (Joan) Bonner, she is survived by nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s (Education) degree from Duquesne University and a master’s (Spanish) degree from the University of Notre Dame. Her early years of ministry were spent teaching students of the elementary and secondary levels in the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg and Pittsburgh. In 1962, she was assigned to teach Spanish at Seton Hill University where she began a 20-year tenure as associate professor of Spanish and chair of the Spanish department. She also taught Spanish during the summer sessions at Seton Hill during the 1960s and 1970s. In reflecting on her more than 70 years in religious life, Sister Jude Thaddeus said, “I thank God for the many graces and blessings I received during my years of ministry as one of Mother Seton’s Sisters of Charity.”
Sister Jeanne Malloy, SC

Sister Jeanne Malloy, SC, (formerly Sister M. Emmanuel) age 79, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Bon Secours Hospital, Altoona. A native of Altoona, PA, Sister Jeanne entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on September 8, 1945, from Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, Altoona. Preceded in death by her parents, John F. and Erma M. (Luther) Malloy and a brother, James Malloy, she is survived by two brothers, John H. and Robert and three sisters, Mrs. Donald (Patricia) Rabine, Mrs. Joseph (Margaret) and Sister Catherine Mary, S.C. and nieces and nephews. Sister Jeanne earned a bachelor’s (Music) degree from Seton Hill University and was a teacher of piano and voice. Sister Jeanne taught in schools of the Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg and Pittsburgh dioceses and in the Archdiocese of Washington. She served in South Korea from 1961 until 1976, when she returned to teach in the United States. She was re-assigned to South Korea in 1981, where she continued to teach until 1991. In 1992, Sister Jeanne was missioned to McNelis Catholic School, Altoona, where she taught and volunteered her services until 1994. Sister Jeanne volunteered to the Senior Companion Program established at Blair Senior Service Center in Altoona from 1994 until her recent illness. A serene, smiling individual, Sister Jeanne exemplified the words of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, “Through piety and gratitude we come to the deepest recess of peace and true contentment.”
Sister Mary Fabian Rodgers, SC

Sister Mary Fabian Rodgers, SC, age 90, died suddenly on April 12, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg.
A native of Johnstown, PA, Sister Mary Fabian entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1933, from Saint Patrick Parish in Johnstown. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Mary Annette (Eckenrod) Rodgers, three brothers: Kenneth W., Harold H., Cyril E., and two sisters: Mrs. Richard L. (Kathleen) Campbell and Eileen Rodgers. Sister Mary Fabian earned a bachelor’s (Education) degree from Duquesne University and taught students of the junior and senior high level in diocesan schools of Greensburg and Pittsburgh. Her longest tenure was at Sacred Heart elementary and high school in Shadyside where she taught from 1957 until 1982. During the summer of 1966, Sister Mary Fabian was an instructor in education at Seton Hill University. After her retirement in 1999, Sister Mary Fabian continued to volunteer her services at Caritas Christi and she enjoyed using the computer to keep in touch with a number of her former students. Encumbered by physical disabilities for a number of years, Sister Mary Fabian believed, as did Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, “The affliction of this life is but a moment, while the glory in the life to come will be eternal.”
Sister Jane McNulty, SC

Sister Jane McNulty, SC, (formerly Sister Mary Clement), age 88 died Sunday, April 23, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. Sister Jane, a Pittsburgh native, entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1936, from Sacred Heart Parish, Shadyside. Preceded in death by her parents, Michael F. and Sophia M. (Ergler) McNulty, a brother, Michael, and sister, Mrs. Thomas H. (Kathryn) Cauley Peters, she is survived by a brother, James E. McNulty and nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s (Biology, Chemistry) degree and a master’s of letters (Biology, Education) degree from the University of Pittsburgh. During her years of active ministry in secondary education, Sister Jane taught science and mathematics at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Mon-Valley Catholic, Holy Innocents, Elizabeth Seton and Sacred Heart high schools in Pittsburgh and Greensburg Central Catholic High School in Greensburg. She taught at Seton Hill University during summer sessions in the 1960s. After she retired from classroom teaching, Sister Jane ministered from 1988-1993, as a part-time secretary to SS. Peter and Paul Parish (Pittsburgh) and then, from 1993-1996, she was Secretary/Receptionist to the East End Cooperative Ministry program. Prior to her retirement, she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House of Pittsburgh. Generous and efficient, Sister Jane was loved and respected by her students and by members of the community. Her presence and demeanor reflected the teaching of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, “Patience and humble submission are the only way to gain the blessing of heaven.”
Sister M. Ildefonse Goss, SC

Sister M. Ildefonse Goss, SC, age 68, died Thursday, April 27, 2006 at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. A native of Altoona, Sister Ildefonse entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on September 8, 1955, from Cathedral Parish, Altoona. Preceded in death by her parents, Robert J. and Mary Grace (Little) Goss, an aunt, Sister M. Angelica Little, S.C.., she is survived by one brother, Thomas R.(Gina) and three sisters, Mrs. Eugene E. (Barbara) Stoltz, Mrs. Richard T. (Judith) Baker, Patricia Goss and numerous nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s (Mathematics) degree from Seton Hill University and a master’s (Education with concentration on Theology) degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Sister M. Ildefonse taught students in schools of the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Phoenix and Pittsburgh and the Archdiocese of Washington. A charter faculty member of Seton-LaSalle High School, Sister Ildefonse taught Religion when Elizabeth Seton and South Hills Catholic High Schools merged to establish Seton-LaSalle in 1979. Her ministry at Seton La-Salle continued until April 2006, when her struggle with cancer compelled her resignation from active ministry. In 1998, she received the Golden Apple award which recognizes outstanding performance in Catholic schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Nominated by a colleague who stated, “From colleagues to parents to students, Sister Ildefonse has inspired and affected many. She is held in the highest regard.” Echoing this tribute, the former principal of Seton LaSalle, Brother Richard Zanetta, FSC, described Sister M. Ildefonse as an “industrious, intelligent, devout ‘giver’ who exemplifies the works and words of the greatest of all teachers, Jesus Christ.”
Sister James Louise Krug, SC

Sister James Louise Krug, SC, age 88 died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. A native of Ashville, PA, Sister James Louise entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1940, from Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish, Ashville. She was preceded in death by her parents, James P. and Olive Z. (Nagle) Krug, three brothers, Gerald S., Raymond H., James Philip and three sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Anna) Fogle, Mrs. Walter (Vera) Becker, Ida Krug. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a cousin, Sister Marie Elizabeth Krug, Order of Carmelites. Sister James Louise earned a bachelor’s (Education) degree from Duquesne University and taught students of the intermediate grades in schools of the Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg, Lafayette, Louisiana, Pittsburgh, Tucson dioceses and in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Sister James Louise was assigned to teach catechetics at Most Holy Trinity Parish in Huntingdon and she also served at Saint Joseph House of Hospitality, Pittsburgh. Sister James Louise ministered at the Adult Day Care Center, Seton Center in Brookline. Outgoing, hardworking, generous and a lover of nature, Sister James Louise developed, nurtured and tended a garden that yielded fruits and vegetables for the table of the retired sisters at Assumption Hall, their former retirement home. She believed, along with Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, “Every good action is a grain of seed for eternal life.”
Sister M. Cornelia O'Friel, SC

A native of Altoona, Sister M. Cornelia entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1944, from Saint Leo Parish, Altoona. Sister Cornelia was preceded in death by her parents, George M. and Lillian M. (Schell) O’Friel, a brother, Reverend Daniel F. O’Friel, three sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Charlotte) Bettwy, Mrs. David (Mary) Curry and Mrs. Timothy (Lilly M.) Welch. She is survived by two brothers, George S. and Edward S. O’Friel, two sisters, Sister M. Clementine O’Friel, S.C. and Mrs. John (Zita) Milliron. She earned a bachelor’s (Business Education) degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s (Business Education) degree from the Catholic University of America. A secondary school teacher of business and religion, Sister Cornelia taught students in the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and Tucson, Arizona. She also taught during the 1963 summer session at Seton Hill University. In 1964, Sister Cornelia was appointed Novice Director for the Sisters of Charity and in 1974, she was named Administrator of Assumption Hall, the former infirmary and retirement home for the Sisters of Charity. From 1978 until 2000, she ministered as the business manager and bookkeeper for Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona. In 2001, Sister Cornelia was inducted into the Altoona Catholic- Bishop Guilfoyle Ring of Honor in recognition of the contribution she made to Catholic education at Bishop Guilfoyle High School. In reflecting on her more than 50 years as a Sister of Charity, Sister Cornelia said, “A love for religious life was nurtured in me from my earliest years by my wonderful parents and so, it is no surprise that I have loved every moment of being one of Mother Seton’s Sisters of Charity.”
Sister Mary Mildred McClain, SC

Sister Mary Mildred McClain, SC, age 78, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at Mercy Jeannette Hospital, Jeannette. A native of Ralph, PA, Sister Mary Mildred entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on September 8, 1950, from Saint Bartholomew Parish, Crabtree, PA. Preceded in death by her parents, Patrick J. and Agnes (Miller) McClain, she is survived by two sisters, Sister Cecilia McClain, S.C., and Mrs. Edward (Mildred) Ulicny, and two nieces and a nephew. She earned a bachelor’s (Education) degree from Seton Hill University and a master’s (Business Education) degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Sister Mary Mildred taught students on the elementary level in the dioceses of Greensburg, Pittsburgh and the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She then began to teach students on the secondary level in the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown and Pittsburgh. She served as president of the Tri-State Business Education Association (1974-75) and received that organization’s lifetime award. She was a member of the Advisory Council at Robert Morris University in 1980. Sister Mary Mildred also ministered in the treasurer’s office at Seton Hill University and in the admission’s office at the former Providence Hospital in Beaver Falls. From 1986 until 1998, Sister Mary Mildred was the director of religious education in Saint Paul Parish, New Bern, NC. From 1998 until 2003, she served as the assistant director of religious education at Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville, NC. In reflecting on her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Mary Mildred expressed gratitude to God for calling her to serve the Church and stated, “Through the guidance and inspiration of the Sisters of Charity, I pray that I have spread the Good News in response to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s encouraging words, ‘Be children of the Church.”
Sister LaSalette Hays, SC

Sister LaSalette Hays, SC, age 72, died Monday, October 9, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. A native of Pittsburgh, Sister LaSalette entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1953, from Saint Rosalia Parish, Greenfield, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Anna Virginia Cadwalder Hays McCann, Joseph T. McCann and a sister, Mrs. Clara Woods. She is survived by two sisters, Anna Marie McCann-Lanese and Mrs. Winnie McCann-Powers, an aunt, Sister Catherine Laboure McCann, S.C. and a niece and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (English) from Seton Hill University and a master’s degree in Education from Arizona State University where she also became certified as a reading specialist. Sister La Salette taught students of the elementary grades in diocesan schools of Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Tucson. She ministered for 24 years at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she specialized in teaching computer skills to the children from kindergarten through the eighth grade level, and to adults in evening classes. Her most recent accomplishment was creating a computer program for the Saint Elizabeth Seton Guild ministry at Caritas Christi. With teaching as her primary focus as a Sister of Charity, Sister La Salette reflected, “I am proud to value Catholic education as Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton did. As a woman of her times, I think she would have taught children to use the computer as part of their whole education and I hope that, throughout my years of teaching, I have taught as Jesus taught.”
Sister Marjorie Flanagan, SC
Sister Marjorie Flanagan, SC (formerly Sister M. Placide) age 90, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. Sister Marjorie entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on March 25, 1935, from Saint Patrick Parish, Brady’s Bend, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents, John J. and Stella C. (Stein) Flanagan, four brothers, Stephen C., Vincent A., Thomas B., James Leo and three sisters, Eileen Flanagan, Mrs. Rose Marie (Jack) Cooney and Mrs. Kathleen (Thomas) Rice. She is survived by a brother John F. (Arleen) and a sister Stella Flanagan and nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s degree in History and Psychology from Duquesne University and taught elementary grade students in schools of the dioceses of Greensburg, Phoenix and Pittsburgh. An avid reader and a “no nonsense” teacher, she motivated students to read, to explore, and to foster a desire for learning. Sister Marjorie organized and supervised one of the first diocesan elementary school Learning Centers, “a new trend in teaching in the 70s” at Saint James School in Wilkinsburg. Afflicted with failing health for a number of years, Sister Marjorie believed, as did Elizabeth Ann Seton, “The affliction of this life is but a moment, while the glory in the life to come will be eternal.”
Sister Agnes Teresa McLane, SC
Sister Agnes Teresa McLane, SC, age 97, died Monday, October 23, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. A native of Archbald, Sister Agnes Teresa, entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1933, from Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish, Archbald, PA. Preceded in death by her parents, John and Bridget (Cawley) McLane, two brothers, Joseph and John McLane and three sisters, Agnes McLane, Mary McLane Lally and Sister M. DeNeri, I.H.M., she is survived by a sister, Sister M. Basil, I.H.M. and nieces. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Latin, English and Music from Seton Hill University and a Nursing diploma from Pittsburgh Hospital. After a brief assignment as an elementary school teacher at Saint John the Baptist School, Pittsburgh, she entered the School of Nursing at Pittsburgh Hospital where she became a registered nurse and then taught student nurses for approximately three years. She ministered as a nurse at Assumption Hall, the Sisters of Charity former infirmary, and was then assigned to social service ministry at the House of Mary in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. She taught health education and was the infirmarian at Seton Hill University. Sister Agnes Teresa ministered for brief periods of time at Providence Hospital and McGuire Memorial Hospital, Beaver County. In 1969, Sister Agnes Teresa was missioned to the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech, where she served as the school nurse until she retired in 1994. Sister Agnes Teresa was a gifted pianist who had the children at DePaul School place their hands on the piano as she played so that they could feel the vibrations and thus ‘hear’ the music. Well loved by the children, her quick wit and quiet humor endeared her to the sisters and other staff members at DePaul. Sister Agnes Teresa looked back on her life as a Sister of Charity and described it as, “a happy time, serving the Lord and caring for his special people, especially the children at DePaul School.”
Sister Mary Agnes Schildkamp, SC
Sister Mary Agnes Schildkamp, SC, age 94, died Friday, November 3, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg. A native of Scottdale, PA, Sister Mary Agnes entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on July 2, 1928, from Saint John the Baptist parish in Scottdale. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry W. and Mary Agnes (Kosters) Schildkamp, three brothers: Harry L., Alfred C. and Robert W., and a sister, Mrs. Dorothea (Elwood) Myers. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Genevieve (Glenn) Johnson and nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English, Biology and History from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in English and Philosophy from the Catholic University of America. A teacher of students in the upper elementary grades and high school, she taught at the former Elizabeth Seton High School, Pittsburgh, where she was principal from 1947 until 1955. She was principal at the former Saint Luke High School in Carnegie from 1955 through 1960 and was then assigned the principalship of Saint Pancratius Parish School, Lakewood, California from 1960 until 1963. In 1963, Sister Mary Agnes was elected to the General Council of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill where she served as Secretary General until 1969. From 1969 until 1980, Sister Mary Agnes was director of Project Forward, a federally-funded educational talent search program. She served as chair of the steering committee of the Greensburg Diocesan Peace Pastoral Program, served on the Justice and Rights Department of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference and was chair of the Greensburg Diocesan Commission on Peace and Justice. In 1977, Sister Mary Agnes received the Distinguished Service Award from the Health and Welfare Council of Westmoreland County for her contribution to the public good in Westmoreland County. In 1979, Sister Mary Agnes was one of four individuals chosen from across the country to testify in behalf of the Talent Search Programs and Educational Opportunity Centers with the Congressional Subcommittee on Higher Education. In 1981, she was honored during the Fifth Annual Conference of the Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Project Personnel in Williamsburg, Virginia, in appreciation of ten years of service to MEAOPP and its Pennsylvania chapter and to disadvantaged youth of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seton Hill University Alumnae awarded Sister Mary Agnes the degree, Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa in 1991. Sister Mary Agnes served on the Seton Hill University Board of Trustees and also on the former Jeannette District Memorial Hospital, now Mercy-Jeannette, Board of Directors. She was a member of the Greensburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and was affiliated with the former Greensburg Diocesan Sisters’ Council. She was a member of the Community Action of Greater Greensburg. Sister Mary Agnes was an instructor in GED at the State Correctional Facility, Greensburg, for a number of years, beginning in 1972. In 1994, Sister Mary Agnes was named to the Seton-LaSalle High School Hall of Fame in recognition of her years of ministry at Elizabeth Seton High School prior to the merger of Elizabeth Seton High School and South Hills Catholic High School. An outstanding teacher and administrator and dedicated follower of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Founder of the Sisters of Charity, Sister Mary Agnes was widely known as a speaker on the life of the saint. In reflecting on her ministry, Sister Mary Agnes stated, “One of the greatest joys for any teacher is to know that her students have gone on to be happy and successful in life.”
