The Locket Portrait
Shorty after their marriage in 1794, William and Elizabeth Seton exchanged small gold lockets, each containing a miniature portrait, one of Elizabeth, the other of William, and two locks of hair.
For years these lockets have been in the loving possession of the New York Sisters of Charity.
During those years, the glass guarding the tiny paintings grew dim and scratched. The images were blurred and indistinct.
But in 1975, at the time of the canonization, the sisters permitted a skilled jeweler to open the precious lockets, and for the first time in many years, the crisp and clear and exquisite image of Elizabeth Ann Seton could be seen.
Copies were made, showing as much detail as the original. The New York Times ran a full-page copy on their magazine cover in September 1975, in a special edition honoring America’s first native-born saint.
This is believed to be the only full-face portrait of Elizabeth Seton painted during her lifetime.
In 1794, William had written to Elizabeth, “I showed my friends your portrait, and many agreeable things were said, for which I felt greatly flattered, but let them know that the artist, although a Frenchman, had not at all flattered you.”

The Filicchi Portrait
This picture is generally known as the “Filicchi Portrait” and is based on an engraving of Elizabeth Bayley Seton by Ceroni (ca. 1798) and after one done by Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Mein in 1797, which the Setons gave the Filicchis. Sometime after the death of William Magee Seton, the Filicchi family commissioned this portrait of Widow Seton based on the face but with the opposite profile from the Ceroni engraving and adding the traditional black cap and cape, habit of American Sisters of Charity. Perhaps Amabilia Filicchi provided the grieving Elizabeth with the customary dress of “widow’s weeds” worn in Tuscany at that time.
The painting remained with the Filicchi family. In 1888, probably in response to a request from the Daughters of Charity asking that he send the portrait to Emmitsburg, Patrizzio Filicchi wrote that he kept the portrait “always before my eyes.” He sent a copy of it to Emmitsburg which is now exhibited in the museum of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton.
In 1984, when Bishop Alberto Ablondi of Livorno, Italy, visited Emmitsburg with a group of pilgrims, among them a Filicchi descendant, the Sisters learned that the original painting had been destroyed during the bombing of World War II.
There have been many copies of the Filicchi portrait made during the years, both left and right silhouettes. The original Filicchi presents the right profile of Elizabeth. Although, in it, Mother Seton wears a finger rosary at the waist. In some later copies, she hold a rosary in her hand. This touch was probably added in the 20th century.
The copy at Emmitsburg, commissioned by the Filicchi family more than a hundred years ago, is considered now to be the most authentic image of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton available.

Prayer of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton to Attain Happiness in God $.25 each
Almighty Giver of all mercies, Father of all, who knows my heard and pities its weaknesses and errors, you know the desire of my soul is to do your will. It struggles to wing its flight to you, its Creator, and sinks again in sorrow for that imperfection which draws it back to earth. How long shall I contend with sin and mortality! When will that hour arrive which shall free the troubled spirit from its prison, and change the sadness of this life for immortality and endless happiness!
I bow to you, my God, in cheerful hope, that confiding in your infinite mercy and assisted by your powerful grace I shall soon arrive at that hour of unspeakable joy. But if it is your will that the spirit shall yet contend with its dust, assist me so to conduct myself through this life as not to render it an enemy.
To this end I place myself in your sacred side and under the mantle of our Lady, my Mother. Let your holy angels surround me and keep me in peace; and let your blessings be upon me.
